THE ENVIRONMENT REFERS TO THE NATURAL WORLD AROUND US, INCLUDING ALL LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS SUCH AS AIR, WATER, SOIL, PLANTS, ANIMALS, AND THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP THE EARTH’S ECOSYSTEMS. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT HUMAN WELL-BEING AND BEHAVIOR.
THE ENVIRONMENT CAN BE VIEWED AT DIFFERENT SCALES, FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL, AND IS INTERCONNECTED IN COMPLEX WAYS. THE STUDY OF THE ENVIRONMENT IS AN INTERDISCIPLINARY FIELD THAT DRAWS ON KNOWLEDGE FROM VARIOUS SCIENCES SUCH AS ECOLOGY, GEOLOGY, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, AND SOCIAL SCIENCES SUCH AS SOCIOLOGY, ECONOMICS, AND POLITICAL SCIENCE.
THE ENVIRONMENT PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN SUPPORTING LIFE ON EARTH AND PROVIDING ESSENTIAL RESOURCES FOR HUMAN WELL-BEING. HOWEVER, HUMAN ACTIVITIES, SUCH AS POLLUTION, DEFORESTATION, AND CLIMATE CHANGE, HAVE HAD SIGNIFICANT IMPACTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT, LEADING TO DEGRADATION AND LOSS OF BIODIVERSITY, AND THREATENING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF HUMAN SOCIETIES.
